Job Summary

Under close supervision, this position may perform duties such as assisting customers with basic library service needs, preparing materials for circulation, managing interlibrary loans, assisting in the maintenance of library records and assisting with assigned service area operations.

Essential Functions

1. Works at assigned desk assisting patrons by answering questions, giving directions, referring patrons to librarians for additional assistance and checking materials in and out.

2. Operates keyboard, PC, tablet, telephone, calculator and 10-key machine and other library/office equipment in daily activities with the customer or in support of routine library activities.

3. Inputs and maintains information in the computer to produce book and patron records, including processing customer applications (verifying information, entering, editing, and filing, and customer website requests/holds); calls and emails patrons as appropriate.

4. Assists patrons with the library catalog and Dewey Decimal System by explaining and showing their use.

5. Collects and records payments; balances cash drawer and processes invoices; and balances daily copy machine cash.

6. Empties book drops, checks in returned materials, sorts and prepares book carts for shelving.

7. Repairs damaged materials; cleans and tests media before circulation.

8. Checks library equipment and materials for use and damage; shelf reads for misplaced materials.

9. Processes periodicals, newspapers and newly acquired materials for public availability; processes interlibrary loan (ILL) materials.

10. Answers telephone, email and in-person questions from the public.

11. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.

12. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others in the course of daily work.

13. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.

Required Skills

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Experience or class studies in word processing or typing.
  • Good knowledge of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and formatting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • Attention to detail.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma/GED required.

Ability to speak English is required; ability to speak Spanish fluently is preferred.

Must pass a federal criminal background check and those handling money will be required to pass a credit check.

Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, and functional assessment screening (Level 1).

Library Assistants assigned to Esports Academy and Create It Services:

  • Perform technology and troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness to learn new software programs
  • Aware of current and emerging Esports and maker space technologies

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This job requires the ability to work in an office environment where the noise level is usually moderate.
