Summer Learning Academy Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and leading the educational activities of the SLA program under the supervision of the SLA program Liaison/Site Director. The SLA program Teacher guides the academic and social development of children ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment that promotes progress and learning.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • The SLA program Teacher must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community. The SLA program Teacher will be responsible for the following:
  • Prepare lesson plans for Math and Literacy activities.
  • Work with the site director/liaison to administer the pre- and post-reading and math assessments.
  • Attend all required training and staff meetings.
  • Instruct and facilitate lesson plans and activities and lead the classroom according to the program outline and quality requirements.
  • Ensure the 1:10 ratio is maintained throughout the literacy and math portion of the day.
  • Proactively manage classroom behavior.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of students (e.g. inclusion accommodations, language strategies).
  • Monitor and report to Site Director/Liaison weekly attendance, student progress, and behavior issues.
  • Assist the site director/liaison with planning and attend the parent/caregiver workshops as needed.
  • Set up the classroom according to the weekly theme to create a stimulating learning environment.
  • Set up for and clean up after all classroom activities.



Education, Experience, and Certifications

  • Current State teaching certification
  • A minimum of two years of teaching experience in early childhood or elementary education
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
