Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking a journalist steeped in open-source intelligence techniques to join Investigations. This new position adds a second OSINT reporter to our Rapid Response team and reflects our enthusiasm for methods that have redefined what is possible for investigative reporting.
We are building on a record of ambitious OSINT-based collaborations produced by our newsroom. Those include a video-based reconstruction of the clearing of Lafayette Square, which last year won the Alfred I. duPont silver baton award, and the Jan. 6 reconstruction “41 Minutes of Fear,” which was part of the package that just won the Pulitzer Prize for public service. These stories and others like them combine the talents of journalists from Rapid and Video’s Visual Forensics Unit as well as from Graphics, Design and other teams across the newsroom.
We are open to a range of possibilities for this job: The successful candidate could be a researcher at an NGO who identifies the perpetrators of atrocities using visual evidence, or an experienced journalist who has made open-source data a key part of their craft. The core requirement is that this person must have a track record of top-notch OSINT work and be familiar with the latest tools and techniques in this space. We are looking for someone who thrives in collaborative settings and is brimming with ideas and energy.
This position offers the opportunity to be a member of a team that partners with every desk in the newsroom and holds to account the U.S. government and other powerful institutions. The Rapid team is charged with developing and executing high-impact accountability stories on the most urgent topics of the day, on any subject at home or abroad. The successful candidate will work closely with Rapid’s Dalton Bennett, an OSINT-focused reporter who was instrumental in the Lafayette Square and Jan. 6 projects. We expect much of this person’s work to support our Visual Forensics projects, but not all. It was Dalton who spotted a cameraman in a photograph from inside the Willard hotel on Jan. 6, tracked him down in Copenhagen and secured permission to report on what turned out to be documentary footage for a story that became “The Roger Stone Tapes,” a text narrative with embedded video clips.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Interested candidates should submit a résumé, a cover letter spelling out your qualifications and vision for the role, and three clips or work samples (submitted as PDFs) representative of the work outlined above via our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 06/20/2022 will be prioritized. Applicants may address the cover letter to Rapid Editor Eric Rich, Deputy Rapid Editor Mary Pat Flaherty, Visual Forensics Executive Producer Nadine Ajaka, Investigations Editor Jeff Leen and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
