Job description
Park Rangers 2 must have an Associate’s or higher-level degree and at least one season* of experience in a park or recreational organization performing any of the following duties: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education or stewardship, forest management, park maintenance or operations, historic preservation or interpretation, or wildlife management or preservation; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and three seasons* of the experience noted above. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position. Must satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation, including fingerprinting. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license as a term and condition of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Security Guard License as a term and condition of employment.
- A season is defined as working at least 300 hours performing the duties noted above.
Duties Description
Under the direction of a Park Manager or Assistant Regional Director, Park Ranger 2s are responsible for supervising the seasonal Park Ranger program and setting a model of professionalism and decorum for Park Rangers to follow; as well as performing administrative or operational tasks as assigned. The Park Ranger 2 is also responsible for recruiting, hiring, training and evaluating seasonal Park Rangers who are assigned to various Parks within the Allegany Region. Park Rangers serve as ambassadors, welcome the public in a friendly and courteous manner, engage visitors in park activities, provide information on facility amenities, educate the public on park rules and regulations and work to gain voluntary compliance, and protect state parks and historic sites. The Park Ranger 2 will:
- Recruit seasonal Park Ranger candidates from colleges, schools, job fairs and through social media campaigns
- Participate in the interview, selection and hiring process
- Coordinate mandated Security Guard Training as well as in-house training
- Coordinate Park Ranger uniform and equipment needs such as cells phones and radios
- Determine availability of bicycles, utility terrain vehicles, and other motorized vehicles
- Visit Parks to observe Park Rangers on duty and confer with Park Managers on the Park Ranger Program
- Monitor personal service and non-personal service budgets and prepare seasonal staffing plans
- Perform routine patrol and security tasks as assigned

- Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred.
