ABOUT THE POSITION: Oversee the administration of WFC’s Quality, Food Safety and Internal Lab Programs for compliance with 1) Good Laboratory Practices in accordance with ISO 17025 and applicable standards, 2) Good Manufacturing Practices in accordance with FDA FSMA and related requirements, 3) SQF Code in accordance with the current SQF standards, as well as 4) internal Company, State, local and kosher standards.
Supervise a team of five or more Laboratory and Quality Line inspection team members in proper techniques and procedures in accordance with Operational needs. Review, update and write relevant, effective and accurate SOP’s for both lab procedures as well as various processes related to Quality and Food Safety. Assist with departmental projects and duties as needed or requested by director/ manager or relevant department head.
Quality Assurance Leadership
- Administer company Quality directives, policies, and procedures to ensure uniform sampling, testing, manufacturing line inspection, and reporting of results on a daily basis.
- Learn and successfully execute all lab-related functions within an SAP environment. These duties include monitoring of inventories of ingredients and packaging, managing and executing the programs related to QA sampling, review, approval, release, QA Hold, inventory transfers, as well as ordering of lab supplies as appropriate.
- Model and share expertise with team re: day-to-day QA lab, micro lab, product testing activities, maintenance and calibration of equipment, and lab-related inventories. Oversee laboratory and in-process control procedures. Train new personnel properly in methods, safety, and housekeeping requirements.
- Monitor Quality Control personnel accountable for testing incoming raw materials, in-process testing, Finished Goods for Microbiological, Chemical, and Physical test parameters as needed.
- Ensure that quality standards of raw materials and finished goods have been maintained throughout all production steps.
- Liaison and partner with Operations’ management to facilitate effective communication, and the free flow of relevant information between departments. Work with plant management to set critical points for measuring quality, and monitor that all results are maintained within acceptable limits.
- Assist in audits by customers, kosher-supervising Rabbis, third parties, and regulatory agencies.
GMPs, SQF Audit and Food Safety Program Expertise
- As a member of the GMP self-inspection team, actively participate in, and drive the internal self-inspection programs, including activities to ensure awareness of any issues. Provide follow up to ensure that corrective actions are appropriate and effective.
- Contribute effectively as a key member of the SQF internal audit program.
- Serve as a trainer for company-wide GMP, quality, food safety, SQF and other programs.
- As a vital member of the recall / traceability team, understand required steps to successfully execute product traceability and recall exercises. Review learnings and corrective actions from those activities, and communicate and follow up with the appropriate parties to ensure ongoing improvement.
- Serve as consultant and member of HACCP Core team for companywide implementation, maintenance, and upgrading as needed of any elements of the HACCP and SQF systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree required. Preferred Bachelors Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology or related science field.
- Certification / Training: Food Safety & HACCP required; FSMA PCQI required (this can be scheduled if not yet completed); SQF practitioner required, NLEA Labeling knowledge is a plus.
- Five - seven years of relevant experience in the food manufacturing industry, preferably in confections. Must have two years of supervisory experience.
- Serve as deputy to the Quality Assurance Manager, as well as to the SQF Audit Coordinator. Must be willing, able and capable to perform all duties of a QA Lab Technician, in the event of an absence or need. This may include the need to work alternate work hours, nights and/or weekends when needed.
- Required Knowledge of federal regulations regarding food manufacturing (Allergen, SSOPs, Recall/Withdrawal).
- Detail-oriented professional passionate about food safety. Known for being approachable, positive, curious and open-minded. Able to multitask and roll with changes, taking the work seriously without taking yourself too seriously.
- Technical expertise: Microsoft Word / Excel proficiency is required; Redzone, Salesforce, SAP are a plus.
