The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Examples of Work

Periodically assess the religious needs of the inmate population. Assures equal status and protection for all religions represented by the inmate population. Coordinates religious services and activities within the facility. Provides individual religious counseling services. Assists individuals in interpreting and integrating religion as part of a treatment or rehabilitation program. Recruits and supervises volunteers to assist with the religious program in order to maximize services and program effectiveness. Serves as a liaison between the facility and local community churches, synagogues, and other religious, civic and service organizations and conducts speaking engagements within the community. Plan, direct, and coordinate all aspects of the religious program including the approval of clergy visitors and training of religious volunteers from faiths represented by the inmate population. Coordinate and/or teach other programming for the facility. Answers religious questions, provides spiritual advice, assist inmates the purchase of religious items, makes religious materials available to inmates, assists with inmate family medical/death notifications, and other duties as requested by staff. Provides an orientation to all inmates and informs of support services available through religion department. Responsible for coordinating the approval process for religious representatives. Maintains the NDCS Clergy Visitor and volunteer databases. Develops and maintains relationships with community religious resources. Provides staff training regarding the agency's religious programs.

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Post high school coursework and/or experience in theology, sociology, psychology, counseling, or other behavioral sciences areas.

OTHER: Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: physical exam/screening, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: the goals, laws, rules, policies and operations pertinent to the Department of Corrections; the psychological, mental, religious and social needs of individuals within the institution; the religious rites, beliefs and practices of the major religious organizations; the principles and practices of clinical pastoral care, including counseling, basic psychology, sermon preparation, the basic principles of developmental theory and group dynamics; community religious organizations and resources.

Ability to: coordinate and/or perform the religious rites practiced by various religious groups; develop treatment goals for individuals within the state institution; plan meaningful worship services; counsel with institutional individuals, their families and staff members; communicate both orally and in writing; assess the religious needs of individuals; develop policies, goals and standards for the operation of the religious program; recruit, train and supervise volunteers who assist with the religious program; organize and coordinate a program involving the religious needs of many separate and different religious preferences.
