A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.
Primary Function:
AIS is recruiting a vessel strike avoidance observer (VSAO) to conduct remote monitoring and vessel strike avoidance watch for an unmanned surface vehicle conducting survey operations on the outer continental shelf. The remote VSAO will monitor for protected species ahead of the survey using a 360-degree camera mounted on the survey vehicle and will be required to communicate with survey vehicle operators when avoidance measures need to be implemented. Three remote VSAO will work in 8 hour shifts per day during operations to monitor 24/7 operations. This position is expected to start September 29, 2022 for an estimated 16-28 days of work. Duties include but are not limited to: identification of protected species; documenting location, documenting behavior and other essential data; documenting data on logs in an organized manner. Candidates will be selected based on their past experience identifying protected species.

- Identify marine animals using the naked eye and visual technology
- Ability to vigilantly monitor for visual and acoustic detections of marine mammals around observation platform/vessel for 8 consecutive hours in a 24 hour period.
- Documenting behavior and other essential data
- Documenting data on logs in an organized manner
Compensation: This is a full–time temporary position. For long term placements on AIS projects you will reach the eligibility threshold for the AIS benefits package. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 4-year degree with major in biological sciences
- Must have passed an approved PSO course/training and provide certificate
- Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity
- Must have proof of eligibility to work within the US
