Job Summary
The Faint Intergalactic Redshifted Emission Balloon (FIREBall) experiment is a complex, multi-object spectrograph designed to look for the faint and diffuse emission from gas outside of galaxies at low redshifts (with lines shifted into the near-UV). The FIREBall team is looking for a full-time Research Assistant to aid in the program in preparing and executing a balloon flight in 2023 and post-flight activities into 2024, and who is comfortable taking over aspects of the project.
Job Duties
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Contributing to alignment telescope and supporting systems.
- Designing and creating mechanical and electrical hardware (including cables and cable management).
- Assisting the project leads with all aspects of managing the instrument and mission.
- Writing and integrating software interfaces with instrument hardware.
- Becoming involved in ongoing collaborations with the Microdevices Laboratory at JPL to continue fabricating, testing, and characterizing CCD and EMCCD Devices (US Citizens only).
Basic Qualifications
- Associate degree/certification/training in a STEM subject from a technical or junior college.
- 1-2 years of experience integrating hardware and software in real-time situations.
- Experience with basic laboratory skills, including electrical hardware, vacuum systems, and hardware testing is highly desired.
- The applicant should be comfortable with trying to integrate hardware and software in real-time situations.
- Applicant will need to travel both domestically (for FIREBall balloon campaigns in either Ft. Sumner, NM or Palestine, TX) and internationally (for integration of the hardware and testing of the instrument in Marseille and Toulouse, France).
Preferred Qualifications
- A BS or BA in a STEM subject is preferred.
- Experience with the Python programming language.
- Familiarity with electronics systems, building computers, and laboratory clean room procedures.
