Job Purpose

This position provides direct support to the Safety, Training and Environmental Manager, with carrying out responsibilities of the Safety and Training Program. The Occupational Safety and Health Specialist ensures safety and training documentation is current, organized and readily accessible. The Specialist designs and conducts training of staff to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of tasks performed. The Specialist works with the Safety and Training Manager to collect and evaluate work-related data, conduct research to enhance the company’s safe practices, and work with various staff/departments to resolve areas of concern.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete assignments from Safety & Training Program
  • Conduct weekly AED checks and document status in assigned log
  • Set up annual CPR training for staff and track the current status of CPR certifications
  • Ensure all safety compliance forms are current (e.g., lift truck checks, fire inspection, etc.)
  • Update staff Safety Bulletin Board monthly
  • Conduct thorough incident/near-miss investigations and report findings to Accident Review Committee
  • Participate in review of incident data and prepare staff Safety Alerts as directed
  • Complete preparations for monthly Safety Committee Meeting and record minutes
  • Conduct research related to accident prevention, training development, etc. as assigned
  • Prepare detailed, comprehensive training manuals and programs as assigned
  • Conduct staff and new hire trainings as assigned (e.g., Lift Truck Safe Operation, Respirator Fit Test, etc.)
  • Conduct new employee Safety Orientation
  • Monitor staffs’ safe practices compliance and address non-compliance
  • Interact with outside inspectors, auditors, etc. as requested
  • Complies with company safety requirements at all times
  • Ability to solve practical problems
  • Performs tasks with attention to detail

Qualifications

  • College degree in Safety related field or High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D) and 2 years of related training/experience
  • Experience with training employees
  • Proficient in computer use and Microsoft software (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • Lift truck operator and manufacturing experience a plus
  • Skilled in public speaking and interacting with diverse groups
  • Attention to detail
  • Simultaneously balances several tasks in fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrate initiative & ability to work independently

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must have good peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to bring objects into sharp focus. On occasion, the employee will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and cold conditions in the plant during some winter months. The noise level of this work environment is typically loud.
