The position of the Project Engineer is a multifaceted role that includes the development, design, improvement and support of mechanical processes for new and existing industrial systems as well as to provide leadership, mentorship and experience to process engineers and designers. This role will require the ability to manage teams as well as individual direct reports. The Project Engineer will be expected to manage project functions such as but not limited to individual employee development and reviewing projects. The Project Engineer will assess project feasibility, cost and timelines and prepare and review P&ID’s, flow diagrams, isometrics, and other engineering drawings. Being client-centered, this role requires the employee to function as a consultant to clients on an ongoing basis. They are expected to have extensive industry knowledge and can potentially manage a project from start to finish including estimation, sourcing, scheduling, troubleshooting, completion and continued follow up with clients to further business arrangements. The Project Engineer is expected to lead in research and help develop solutions for clients.
Major Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Provide expertise in various aspects of piping, engineering and equipment layout design as well as other functions as required.
- Provide mentorship to junior and lead process engineers.
- Research and analyze client requests associated with process or mechanical design.
- Supervise projects independently of direct supervision.
- Design concepts, drawings, equipment specifications and control concepts for industrial processes including piping and heat transference.
- Participate in planning, cost development and scheduling for projects.
- Generate analyses, specifications, cost estimates, and estimated construction schedules for projects.
- Coordinate with various engineering groups including controls and electrical departments to assist in designing systems for projects.
- Communicate with clients, vendors, and relevant stakeholders on projects.
- Create and edit existing P&ID’s, isometric and other engineering drawings.
- Provide on-site support of projects as well as follow up support as needed.
- Participate in team project meetings.
- Prepare technical information and presentations for peers, teams and clients.
- Conduct meetings with teams, groups and clients.
- Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, and innovation are highly valued.
- Ensure that clients’ input and job requirements are adequately addressed and implemented consistently within contractual requirements and ICC standards.
- Prepare and evaluate upcoming tasks, potential problems, technical information, and staffing priorities.
- Monitor projects progress versus estimates and when necessary, offer solutions for challenges to get projects back on track while maintaining budget.
- Provide ongoing feedback to project managers and stakeholders to project timelines, budgets, scope of work, and vendor relations.
- Provide on-site support of projects as well as follow up support as needed.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
- 10+ years’ experience in engineering required.
- Professional Engineering License a plus.
- Experience in facility design including piping design, pump and compressors, safety systems, storage tanks, and heat exchangers.
- Demonstrated competence at team leadership and development.
- Ability to accurately interpret and critically evaluate design drawings and schematics.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and maintain quality service while under pressure.
- High level of conscientiousness and attention to detail.
- Ability to work alone or within groups as necessary.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g., Being able to explain technical issues to clients using common language.)
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and AutoCAD.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
