About Our School: The Cove School is a non-public therapeutic day school for students with learning disabilities located in Northbrook just 35 minutes north of Chicago. Cove students come from 60 different public schools throughout the Northern Illinois area. Families can also choose to fund tuition privately.
For 70 years, The Cove School has been a national leader within its field, creating an exceptional environment where children with learning disabilities “learn how to learn” and develop the emotional and social skills to reach within, achieve above, exceed beyond, and maximize student growth. Classes are kept small. Teaching is flexible and varies according to the individual student’s learning style. A team of onsite specialists work collaboratively to provide students intensive, integrated related services.
Minimum Education: B.A./B.S., Illinois PEL Required
Certification: LBS1 Endorsement and Experience working with students with learning disabilities preferred
I. School Responsibilities
A. Prepare lessons and materials in advance.
B. When appropriate, attend staffings and parent conferences.
C. Write two (2) progress reports on each student.
D. Consult with the music, art, dance, physical education, and LD classroom teachers as well as occupational therapist to provide an integrate program school-wide.
E. Collaborate with the faculty on the students' programs and progress.
F. Participate in social skills training programs for selected students (e.g., reinforce specific social skills delineated by the classroom teachers and/or social workers). Participate in other professional development related to the role.
G. Assist parents and students in understanding the student's learning disability, develop realistic expectations and goals, articulate the strengths and weaknesses of the student, and help the student become an advocate for himself/herself. Help the students understand their learning disabilities as they relate to academic tasks and social settings.
H. Consciously maintain effective working relations with others.
II. Personal-Professional
A. Continue to remain abreast on current research and practices in the field of learning disabilities.
B. Develop an understanding of the unique needs of LD students and how this subject matter can enhance their self-expression, talents and self-esteem.
III. Non-classroom responsibilities
A. Participate in curriculum planning and program development.
B. Participate in student staffings.
C. Attend faculty meetings.
D. Communicate with parents on a consistent basis between grading periods.
E. Participate in school events: (i.e., Field Trips, Parent/Curriculum Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, Project Fair and Graduation)
F. Perform routine tasks, student attendance, etc.
G. Collaborate with teachers regarding the students' goals, programs, and progress.
H. Participate in school committees.
