The Woodworking Instructor is responsible for teaching patients/students and directing participation in all aspects of woodworking: functional and sculptural. The person in this role works collaboratively with staff and students to bring the resources of the woodshop to the other studios, including working closely with the visual arts instructor around shows in our gallery.

The instructor will work as part of our Activities Department to provide a space that is separate from the clinical environment to facilitate and promote skill development, creativity, and self-direction. The person in this role will also be attentive to the uniqueness of the patient/student role and strive to help them enhance their inherent strengths and develop the capacity for creative work. Maintaining a safe working environment is a central responsibility of the instructor's role.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Teach woodworking skills related to sculpture/craft (primarily beginning level)
    • Provide inspiration, technical guidance, and scaffolding for students to plan and carry out projects.
    • Teach one-on-one with an individualized approach, yet also foster a workspace open to collaborative making and learning.
    • Oversee and implement the inclusion of new, updated, and or combined making methods into the established studio.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, Education, or related field. Advanced/Continuing Education in related specialty. Equivalent experience considered.
  • Mastery in woodworking as demonstrated by portfolio, work experience and/or exhibition record.
  • Teaching experience at public or private school (Secondary, College or University level) strongly preferred.
  • Ability to promote patient’s rights and demonstrate respect for confidentiality at all times.
  • Bending, lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • May be exposed to loud noises and distracting environment.
