Job description
The full-time Youth Services Library Assistant will work under the supervision of the Children and Youth Services Librarian and assist with Children’s department programming. The individual in this role is expected to work a schedule of 40 hours per week and will be expected to work a flexible schedule when needed, including some Saturdays. The hours for this position will typically be 10:00am - 7:00pm.

The duties of this position may include but not be limited to:
- Manages the circulation desk during evenings.
- Acts as evening supervisor and oversees the work of evening volunteers. May involve training in all volunteer areas.
- Assists Children and Youth Services Librarian with Teen night, TAB meetings, story times, summer reading and other programming needs.
- Works with the PR Coordinator to promote/advertise evening children & youth programs as needed.
- Maintains the children/youth areas of the library when Children’s Librarian not present, includeing development and design of displays.
- Assists with room booking system, ensuring proper procedures for evening.
- Assists patrons with new applications, reserves, and retrieves patron requests from shelves.
- Provides patron assistance with computers, printer and general device tech support.
- Assists patrons with using the integrated library system catalog.
- Will regularly check on accuracy of patron accounts, manages overdue/lost procedures.
- Resolve customer service issues with patrons.
- Will acquire working knowledge of regulations and procedures pertaining to library responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- One (1) year of recent experience in a library or similar setting working with the public.
- Experience working with children/youth.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of library principles and practices.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Excellent writing, technical/computer and organizational skills.
- Ability to engage children/youth using stories, songs, crafts.
- Ability to work with children/youth and parents with patience.
- Attentiveness to safety and security of library patrons.
- Ability to listen to public with understanding and respond in mature manner.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative and work cooperatively on a team.
- Understanding of confidentiality in patron records.
- Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude towards co-workers, volunteers and patrons.
