The Academic Success Coach assists students in improving academic behaviors and in making informed decisions about academic matters. The Student Success specialist will identify, assess, advise, support and case manage new and continuing students deemed in need for the purpose of improving student performance through targeted interventions. Specifically, this position will supports Vet Tech and Nursing students (as well as other sciences) through coaching meetings, coordination of group sessions, and as the primary instructor for Structured Learning (recitations promoting science- based study and time management skills).

The success candidate will:

  • Meet with new and continuing students to provide information and academic supports.
  • Convey and interpret the College's academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors and courses of study.
  • Respond to students concerns/problems by advising or referring students to appropriate college resources (psychological counseling, career planning, etc.) as appropriate and assist students with instructor and syllabi communications.
  • Record, monitor and maintain student records.
  • Coordinate the development, implementation and case management of student success plans for a caseload of students in need.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to monitor assigned students, including academic progress, Early Alert, academic behavioral progress, and the adherence to any plans they have (study contracts and intervention plans).
  • Ensure faculty and staff have the information, knowledge, and resources needed to support at-risk students.
  • Conduct student success workshops. Teach student success courses annually.
  • Maintain confidentiality, including all student records.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interpret and explain information to a variety of individuals and groups.
  • Proven ability to address academic issues with students and staff related to at- risk, underprepared and student uncertainty, and academic success.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently toward department goals.
  • Proven ability to navigate and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Knowledge and skill with technology including computer software programs for data collection, decision making, and communication.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, if needed (evenings and weekends may be necessary)

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in student success related field (education, human service, psychology, sociology, social work, etc)
  • Experience in Teaching, tutoring, or counseling experience
  • Higher education work experience or academic student support experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Education, Counseling, Social Science field
  • Experience and knowledge of biological science, vet tech, nursing a plus
  • Experience with academic coaching
  • Post-secondary teaching experience preferred
  • Reading specialist a plus
  • Ability to tutor math and/or science a plus
  • Online education experience for student support a plus
  • Experience with assessment, data collection and analyses
