Job description for Peer Tutors
Pay Stipend: 10 hours per week at $8.00
Peer tutors facilitate student learning by helping to clarify specific course content and promote the use of appropriate study strategies. Tutors may consult with the Peer Tutor coordinator for course resources, guidance, and direction in their tutoring work. The most common courses supported include math and reading. Tutors conduct regularly scheduled small group tutoring sessions throughout the semester as needed. Tutors do not provide answers to homework assignments, but work with students to model problem solving strategies and explain course-specific concepts in compliance with the school districts academic integrity standards. Peer tutors typically work 10 hours per week.
What does a Peer Tutor do?
- Assists students with specific course-related concepts and problems
- Facilitates development of effective, related study skills
- Conducts small group tutoring sessions
- Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Peer Tutor Coordinator
- May consult with Peer Tutor Coordinator for course resources, guidance, and direction
- Works approximately 10 hours per week

Responsibilities:
- Attend weekly meetings with the Peer Tutor Coordinator
- Report to the Peer Tutor Coordinator any concerns he/she may have about a student
- Conducting the tutoring session and maintaining discipline in a nurturing respectful manner, if unable to maintain discipline with youth contact the Peer Tutor Coordinator. DO NOT ENGAGE in aggressive manner with any youth.
- Work in small groups with youth of various ages and ability levels
- Work independently with little to no adult intervention during tutoring time.
- Complete weekly progress forms on how youth are progressing with skills
- Administer an end of unit exam/ end of the semester exam to youth
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled Franklin-Simpson High School student
- 2.5 GPA or higher
- No more than two discipline referrals
- The desire to work with youth of all ages, grades k-6 no matter intellectual ability, social status, or cultural background
- Experience working with children (baby-sitting, youth group, camp, etc.)
- Recommendations upon request
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
- A commitment to helping others learn
