Description/Job Summary

The mission of Resources for Human Development (RHD) is to provide caring, effective and innovative services that empower people of all abilities as they build better lives for themselves, their families and their communities. RHD's multi-faceted programs serve people with a variety of challenges that include intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, substance abuse and homelessness.

The CTRP Peer Specialist will work with a team of staff and individuals receiving service to ensure that their health, safety, skill building, community integration and coordination of services needs are being met. The CTRP program emphasizes on assessing indvidiuals, supporting skill building and linkage to community resources. The Peer Specialist reports to the Program Manager.

The Primary location for this program is Durham, NC.

Full Time schedule available: Sunday- Thursday 1PM - 9PM

Sunday-Thursday 7AM - 3PM

Tuesday-Saturday 7AM - 3PM


Part Time schedule available: Saturday & Sunday 9AM- 5PM

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Facilitate groups which provide education on health/mental illness concerns
  • Engage in Person Centered planning and goal reviewing
  • Advocate for consumers' rights and preferences
  • Consult with community agencies, guardians, and families to maintain coordination in the treatment process
  • Monitoring for monitoring health & safety of consumers
  • Linking to outside resources
  • Assisting with maintaining benefits
  • Provide ongoing assessment, problem solving, side-by-side services, skill training, supervision (e.g. prompts, assignments, monitoring, and encouragement) and environmental adaptations to assist consumers with activities of daily living.
  • Assist and support consumers to carry out personal hygiene and grooming tasks.
  • Provide nutrition education and assistance with meal planning, grocery shopping and food preparation.
  • Assist and support consumers by teaching skills necessary to perform household activities, including house cleaning and laundry.
  • Provide side-by-side support and coaching to help consumers socialize (arranging social outings e.g. going with a client to a basketball game, coaching and supporting a client before he or she goes to a family reunion).
  • Assist consumers with medication monitoring and management (e.g. ensure that clients are taking medications as prescribed by treating physician).

Required Experience

Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a residential facility or mental health setting is preferred

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must Pass Criminal Background Check
  • Lived experience and Certified in peer support in NC

Program Summary

RHD North Carolina's Community Transitional Recovery Program (CTRP) provides short term increased supervision and support to individuals who have high and complex needs exiting state institutions or hospitals to furtherassess and prepare them for community-based living. CTRP provides a less restrictive alternative to hospitalization that further promotes recovery and community integration. CTRP creates a continuum of care from crisis to community living with links to community services and supports.
