Job description
The Education Justice Coalition is looking to hire a part-time youth organizer who will help advance community-led oversight over education for young people entering and exiting juvenile detention facilities, and enforce and strengthen the legal rights of detained young people in Los Angeles County. The position may require some in-person advocacy, and some work can be done remotely.
Staff Term (Fixed Term)
Primary Responsibilities
- Co-facilitate monthly coalition meetings.
- Spend 1 hr/wk for overall strategy and agenda planning.
- Inform and implement policy agenda to build a more inclusive education system.
- Monitor agendas for public meetings, including LACOE School Board, Board of Supervisors, and Probation Oversight Commission; attend relevant meetings.
- Develop and mobilize a public comment strategy among youth (e.g. create action toolkits with talking points) in collaboration with coalition.
- Coordinate with community partners to ensure collaboration. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications
- Typically a high school diploma or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
- Lived experience in multiple systems as a youth involved in the juvenile injustice and/or child welfare systems.
- Passionate about abolishing violent school practices and transforming our education and justice systems
- Willing to improve communication and coalition building skills
- Developed problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated computer competency
- Available to work 16 hours per week, on average
