DCCCA is recruiting for Family Mentors to serve families in the Mission, KS and surrounding areas.

Family Preservation Services (FPS) provides intensive in-home services and case management services to families who have one or more children at risk of out-of-home placement or who will be at risk of out-of-home placement at birth. Family Mentors serve an integral role in keeping Kansas families together by providing one on one support to clients. They offer guidance and support to people who are struggling with substance abuse. They generally have first-hand experience with similar traumatic events or circumstances and work closely with a variety of professionals to provide counseling and rehabilitation. Family Mentors also provide for the safety and well-being of the children and families by delivering culturally competent services to the unique needs of the family.

Overview of the Family Mentor:

  • Provides for the safety, stability and well-being of children and families during the referral period
  • Delivers culturally competent services using a strengths-based approach to children and families consistent with the evidence-based practice models
  • Meets DCF timelines to connect with the family within 24 hours of referral; facilitate initial family meeting within 48 hours of referral; complete assessment-based case plan within in 20 days of referral; case closure within 3- 6 months of referral
  • Responds to calls and client emergencies as needed
  • Meets with clients no less than once a week to offer one-on-one support
  • Develops recovery plans, coping methods, and rehabilitation strategies with the clients
  • Facilitates treatment assessments and referrals, provides client support in arranging for medical appointments, counseling, support groups, and other resources as needed
  • Monitors the client's behavior, schedule, medication, and activities
  • Reports any unusual behavior, conflicts, or recovery deviations to the relevant professionals
  • Coordinates community support services and provides transportation and other resources as needed
  • Assesses child safety and well-being
  • Document case activities weekly and attends court hearings
  • Act as a liaison between schools and mental health professionals

Qualifications for the Family Mentor:

  • Requires lived experience with substance use disorders, treatment, and recovery. Requires a minimum of three years of continuous recovery and continued participation in a stable recovery program (i.e. 12-step, church, spiritual, or other recovery group).
  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Thorough knowledge of recovery resources such as the 12-step program and community support groups, required.
  • Valid driver's license with clear driving record, required.
  • Experience with the child welfare system, helpful.

Successful completion of pre-employment background screening, reference checks, fingerprinting clearance, and drug screening is required. Class C driver’s license with clear driving record, reliable personal transportation, and current automobile insurance, required. Approval by DCCCA’s auto insurance provider to drive vehicles on DCCCA business, required.
