Job Summary for Manager Coding Services: The Manager of Coding Services is responsible for the day-to-day management of coding operations, working closely with the coding vendor(s) and revenue cycle managers to ensure successful delivery of solutions and/or services to our clients while maintaining consistent and compliant coding practices.

Essential Functions for Manager Coding Services:

  • Leads the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure clear and consistent operation of coding areas while meeting organizational needs
  • Ensures all coding queue volumes are up to date through effective management of coding vendor relationships and processes
  • Establishes standards and TAT utilizing the physician portal and historical benchmarks
  • Leads and develops the internal coding team. Assists direct reports in the performance of duties by answering questions, providing updated information on changes, and actively supporting them while managing workloads.
  • In coordination with the VP, RCM facilitates all internal and external coding audits and manages outcomes, including remedial training and provider education.
  • Manages all communication between vendors regarding audit findings and remediation actions.
  • Prepares written reports of audit results and presents results to management and staff
  • Assists in coding-related denial resolution and provides coding-related information needed to resolve root cause issues impacting AR and collection rate goals. Will serve as subject matter expert for the claim review process and will manage tasks relating to claim criteria, claim review, and support of any disputes.
  • Responds/reviews questions from providers regarding coding documentation as needed
  • Generates reports and performs analyses as needed to support trends, issues, and recommendations to clients, providers, and/or management
  • Works cooperatively with other RCM managers to analyze coding practices, maximize collection activities and ensure compliance with applicable industry rules and regulations
  • Plans and deploys coding education across the organization
  • Communicates relevant coding related changes/information to client sites and staff
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of the current changes in coding practices by continuing education and reading resource material such as Coding Clinic, Medicare Newsletter, and other professional journals
  • Performs performance evaluations for coding department staff
  • Performs regular productivity monitoring and motivates staff to maximize productivity
  • Special projects: oversee complex coding operational activities, participate in budget development as needed
  • Capable of successfully managing a remote staff and maintaining SHP culture
  • Educates and trains coders to maintain consistent compliant coding practices. Keeps policies and procedures up to date and reflective of current practice
  • Maintains an effective coding compliance program with applicable federal and state regulations and validates/resolves non-compliance issues with appropriate corrective actions
  • Ability to travel as needed.
Requirements:

Competencies for Manager Coding Services:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience and knowledge of CPT and ICD coding and 2 years of experience in management
  • Certification in Professional Coding (CPC) or equivalent certification required
  • Thorough knowledge of coding policies and procedures
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate medical records
  • Experience with EMR systems
  • Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of direct reports
  • Ability to evaluate and respond appropriately to correspondence
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Strong computer systems background is desirable. Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to communicate with management to prioritize workload and determine priorities.
  • Ability to apply great attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to apply strong problem-solving skills to identify unique situations that would require the attention of management
  • Maintain a high standard of work even under the pressure of a deadline and frequent interruptions, remaining professional, responsive, and cooperative
  • Meet deadlines consistently, displaying flexibility and an eagerness to get the job done
  • Ability to work with integrity, trust, and commitment, setting an example for others
