The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for monitoring claim status, researching rejections and denials, documenting related account activities, posting adjustments and collections of Medicare, and commercial insurance payers. The Medical Collections Specialist must possess understanding of Medicare eligibility requirements as well as commercial insurance payer payment methods to correctly record contractual adjustments base on payer contracts or government regulations.

Core Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a medical office setting and/or experience with a billing system, plus customer service driven.
  • Ability to learn quickly, build and maintain long term relationships and work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines including HMO/PPO, Medicare, and other payer requirements and systems.
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 Coding.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality as per (HIPPA) Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
  • Competent use of computer systems, software, and 10 key calculators.
  • Effective communication abilities for phone contacts with insurance payers to resolve issues.
  • Customer service skills for interacting with patients regarding medical claims and payments, including communicating with patients and family members of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and multitask. Being able to triage priorities.
  • Problem-solving skills to research and resolve discrepancies, denials, appeals, collections.
  • A calm manner and patience working with either patients or insurance representatives during this process.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology likely to be encountered in medical claims.

Duties and Tasks:

  • Separate Denials from record requests.
  • Identify claims that needed to be work.
  • Document any/all activity in the patient’s account.
  • Communicate any unusual denial to immediate supervisor.
  • Review BCBS new patients and send out welcome letters.
  • Communicate with BCBS patients.
  • Communicate with CAs (Chiropractic Assistant), Manager and /or supervisor of unusual patients' response.
  • Identify accounts with no response from patients for more than 12 months that should go to Medical Collections.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)

Experience:

  • ICD-10: 1 year (Preferred)
