Pay Scale: Classified Scale A


General Description:

Individuals in this position will work daily with one or more students identified with a disability to provide them with the academic, emotional, and physical support needed to gain access to the curriculum.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  • Provides academic and behavioral services outlined in the students’ IEP under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Assists the student(s) with physical tasks such as but not limited to toileting needs, feeding, academic needs, and transitioning from room to room.
  • Assists with simple tasks for the student(s) such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, reading assignments to students, writing students’ responses, etc.
  • Under the direction of the special education teacher, works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive classroom environment.
  • Provides behavioral and emotional support for students.
  • Supervises students.
  • Collects and documents data and shares data with the classroom teacher and building principal as requested.
  • Maintains confidentiality and ethics at all times.
  • Participates in staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions, correspondences, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations in various ways to meet the students learning styles.
  • Ability to solve various math problems such as but not limited to percent, measurement, and fractions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to assist with behavior management and deescalate situations.
  • Ability to use technology as needed for instructional assistance.

Education, Training, and Experience Requirement:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • An Associate’s Degree or two years of post-secondary coursework (preferred)
  • A passing score on the ParaPro test if the individual does not hold an associate’s degree or two years of post-secondary coursework

Physical Attributes/Demands:

Assignments may require lifting and positioning students, controlling certain behavior through physical restraint, and assisting non-ambulatory students. Work may include noisy and/or disruptive student behavior.

Work requires continuous standing, walking, and may require lifting and/or restraining students. Most assignments require manually transferring, lifting, and moving supplies or equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.


Evaluation:

Performance on this job will be evaluated by the building principal in accordance with the school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of classified personnel.
